After a brutal killing in London, he sees a ghost, his first one. He and his probationary friend, Lesley, begin their own investigation and this brings Peter to the attention of Nightingale.
Nightingale is a wizard, that works with the police and he asks Peter tobecome his apprentice. This is the start of Peter's education into the otherworld in London and also him learning how to control his magic abilities.
At the same time, they are trying to negotiate a conflict between Mother Thames and Father Thames. And of course stop a string of brutal killings caused by something magical.
This is the first book I have read by this author, and I kinda enjoyed his writing style. I did like the imaginative use of magic and I also enjoyed the detective story. However, it was a little too heavy on the history of London and how magic works in this world. Those parts really slowed down the plot. Nightingale is probably more interesting than Peter, but due to the story being from Peter's POW, we don’t get to learn that much about Nightingale, which is a shame.
Peter for me is a typical bloke, and in some ways this was disappointing, because I expected someone with magical abilities to be more unsual.
